These videos, possibly the first ever videotaping of the
Rastafari, were filmed August 5th, 1969 in the shanty
that housed the Ethiopian World Federation Local 37 in
Salt Lane, Kingston, Jamaica. Lambros Comitas, an
anthropology professor at Teachers College, Columbia
University, taped these events at the request and
invitation of Mortimo Planno, a powerful and striking
figure. Kumi, as known by his friends, played a pivotal
role in the public unfolding of the Rastafarian movement
in Jamaica. He also played a critically important part
in initiating the politically potent study of that
movement. As part of his lifelong dedication to the
movement, he participated as a Rastafarian member in the
historic Government Mission to Africa, a mission sent to
explore the possibilities of repatriation. These films
contain Rastafarian rites and an Amharic lesson.

The
Ethiopian Coup d'Etat of December 1960
In December 1960, Emperor Haile Sellassie departed for a
state visit to Brazil. Soon after his departure, the
Officers of the Imperial Guard, led by their Commander,
Lt. General Mengistu Newaye and his brother Girmame
launched a coup-d'etat. After seizing key points in the
capital, they placed the leading figures of the nobility
and the government under arrest in the Green Salon in
the Guenete Leul Palace. Empress Menen, Princess
Tenagnework and the Duchess of Harrar along with their
children were placed under guard at their respective
homes. Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen was forced to go on the
radio and announce that the Imperial Guard had
overthrown the Emperor, and that he was assuming the
throne. He announced that he would be a constitutional
monarch and would "live on a salary". He announced that
this was done to liberate Ethiopians from poverty and
backwardness. He also announced that his cousin Ras
Imiru was to be Prime Minister, and that Lt. General
Mulugueta Bulli would be Chief-of-Staff. Ras Imiru, also
a captive along with the Crown Prince and was also
forced to aquiece. General Mulugueta, was not
cooperative, and was held prisoner in the Green Salon.
The coup leaders had made certain key mistakes. They
failed to win over or arrest the commanders of the
regular army, and they failed to seize three key
figures. One was Prince Asrate Kassa, the leading
conservative nobleman; the other two were Crown Princess
Medferiashwork and Prince Sahle Sellassie. Crown
Princess Medferiashwork, convinced that her husband was
being forced to accept the throne, played an important
role. She and her children had been left alone in their
house, so she contacted the commanders of the Army and
had them meet in her house with Prince Asrate Kassa and
the other nobles who had eluded capture. This enabled
them to coordinate their efforts and resolve to refuse
to accept the coup-d'etat. Prince Sahle Sellassie was a
ham radio hobbyist. He was also left alone in his home,
so he was able to send out a message to ham radio
operators that the Imperial Guard in Ethiopia had
launched a coup-d'etat against his father. The ham radio
operators around the world were able to contact the
Emperors plane on its way to Brazil, and he promptly
turned back. The final straw was when the Patriarch of
the Orthodox Church, Abune Baslios, refused to recognize
the new government. Instead he issued an excommunication
against those who had defied the monarch anointed by the
church, and called on the people not to accept them as
their rulers. This edict was printed up and scattered
all over Addis Ababa by Army helicopters. News arrived
that the Emperor had landed in Asmara, and that the
population there had turned out by the thousands to
greet him in an act of loyalty. The army then stormed
the Guenete Leul Palace pushing out the Imperial Guards,
and freed the Crown Prince and Ras Imiru. However, the
coup leaders had fled, but not before machine-gunning
the prisoners in the Green Salon, killing many of the
leading figures of the nobility and the government. The
Emperor returned and order restored.

Ethiopia,
Africa's Ancient Kingdom 1961 - Approx. 17 Minutes
Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world and
Africa's second-most populous nation. Ethiopia has
yielded some of humanity's oldest traces, making the
area a primary factor in the origin and developmental
history of humanity, with recent studies claiming the
vicinity of present-day Addis Ababa as the point from
which human beings migrated around the world. Ethiopian
dynastic history traditionally began with the reign of
Emperor Menelik I in 1000 BC. The roots of the Ethiopian
state are similarly deep, dating with unbroken
continuity to at least the Aksumite Empire (which
officially used the name "Ethiopia" in the 4th century)
and its predecessor state, D`mt (with early 1st
millennium BC roots). After a period of decentralized
power in the 18th and early 19th centuries known as the
Zemene Mesafint ("Era of the Judges/Princes"), the
country was reunited in 1855 by Kassa Hailu, who became
Emperor Tewodros II, beginning Ethiopia's modern
history. Ethiopia's borders underwent significant
territorial expansion to its modern borders for the rest
of the century due to several migrations and commercial
integration as well as conquests, especially by Emperor
Menelik II and Ras Gobena, culminating in its victory
over the Italians at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 with the
military leadership of Ras Makonnen, and ensuring its
sovereignty and freedom from colonization. It was
brutally occupied by Benito Mussolini's Italy from 1936
to 1941, ending with its liberation by British
Commonwealth and Ethiopian patriot forces.

The tragic plight of Ethiopian Hebrews a.k.a.
The Black Jews (Falashas) takes center stage in this
well-researched and moving documentary by Simcha
Jacobovici. The Falashas ("exiles") have lived for over
2,000 years in this region and are vastly outnumbered in
a state that is half Muslim, with Christians making up
the next largest religious group (Jews are too minor a
group, less than 1%, to figure in statistics). But the
discrimination arises from politics: Jews were massacred
after the 1974 Marxist military coup -- not by the
Marxists, but by their opposition, because they feared
the Falashas would support the government. They are also
prosecuted by the Marxists who fear Judaism stops them
from supporting the government. In interviews with Jews
living in distant villages, stories of torture and
murder at the hands of Ethiopian authorities are told in
all their tragedy, and the Falashas in the Sudanese
refugee camps were afraid to be photographed. Meanwhile,
Israel says it is "doing everything it can" to help the
Falashas, while Jewish agencies in North America claim
that Israel is doing next to nothing in that regard. In
the end it becomes very clear that the Falashas suffer
from a double stigma: they are both black and Jewish.

fair front to the world, covering with apologies her
record of horrible cruelties. She has clothed herself in
Christ-like garments but she is unchanged. Every
principle of popery that existed in ages past exists
today. The doctrines devised in the darkest ages are
still held. Let none deceive themselves. The popery that
Protestants are now so ready to embrace and honor is the
same that ruled the world in the days of the
Reformation, when men of God stood up at the peril of
their lives to expose her iniquity. She possesses the
same pride and arrogant assumption that lorded it over
kings and princes, and claimed the prerogatives of God.
Her spirit is no less cruel and despotic now than when
she crushed out human liberty, and slew the saints of
the Most High. Popery is just what prophecy declared
that she would be - the apostasy of the latter times. It
is a part of her policy to assume the character which
will best accomplish her purpose; but beneath the
variable appearance of the chameleon, she conceals the
invariable venom of the serpent. She declares: "We are
not bound to keep faith and promises to heretics". Shall
this power, whose record for a thousand years is written
in the blood of the saints, be now acknowledged as a
part of the church of Christ? A must see for everyone.
